Good Stress, Bad Stress

Stress has earned a bad reputation, but not all stress is harmful.

In fact, a certain level of stress is essential to life. It helps us stay alert, focused, and ready to respond. This is what we might call good stress, the kind that sharpens our attention, motivates action, and allows us to rise to a challenge.

Think of the energy you feel before an important meeting, a presentation, or even a meaningful conversation. The Heart beats a little faster, the Mind becomes more focused, and the Body prepares to perform. This is the sort of stress working with you, not against you.

Problems arise when stress becomes a constant in our lives.

This kind of stress is not about intensity, but about duration. When the body remains in a state of alert for too long, it starts losing balance. Sleep is affected, digestion slows down, and even simple tasks can feel overwhelming.

The key difference lies in recovery.

Good stress comes and goes. It is followed by rest, reflection, and a return to serenity. Bad stress lingers, leaving the body and the brain with no opportunity to reset.

Learning to recognise this difference allows us to respond more wisely. Not all stress needs to be avoided: some of it is a sign that we are engaged, growing, and alive.

Fact:

Stress is not the enemy. Chronic stress is.

Fun Fact:

The parts of your Brain and Body that make you feel stress are the very same ones activated by excitement.
A racing heart, heightened focus, a surge of energy: these signals are not exclusive to anxiety.
They also appear when something meaningful or exciting is about to happen.
This means that what we often label as nervousness can, mostly, easily be reframed.
Instead of thinking: "I feel anxious, nervous, stressed…" you can choose to say: "I feel excited. I am ready. I am so looking forward to this!"
The Body has already prepared you.
Sometimes, all that is needed is for the Mind to follow.
